World news, also international or foreign news, is the jargon used by news media to refer to stories that pertain to a global subject. This could include events such as wars and peace summits, but is often more generally defined to encompass the activities of all countries, even when they are not engaged in conflict.
In the context of journalism, this news is usually sent by a correspondent (a full-time reporter working for a particular newspaper or television or radio station) who is based in a foreign city or country. A correspondent typically files regular news articles to his or her editor, and may gather material for these articles by interviewing local officials, members of the community, etc.
A large number of news agencies specialize in the preparation of hard and soft news articles that can be distributed to newspapers and other publications through their wire services, originally by telegraph but now mostly via electronic means such as the Internet. News organizations, private individuals and intelligence agencies subscribe to these services. The bulk of major news agency services contain world news.
